Calan Uses

Calan is in a class of drugs called calcium channel blockers. Calan relaxes (widens) blood vessels (veins and arteries), which makes it easier for the heart to pump and reduces its workload. • Calan is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), to treat angina (chest pain), and to control some types of irregular heartbeats.

How To Use Calan

Take Calan exactly as directed on the package or as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you. Take each dose with a full glass of water. It can be taken with or without food. Never take more of this medication than is prescribed for you.

Calan Side Effects

This drug may cause following serious side effects : an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, or hives), an unusually fast or slow heartbeat, shortness of breath (heart failure), fainting, abnormal behavior or psychosis, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), or swelling of the legs or ankles. Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take Calan and talk to your doctor if you experience. unusual headache, fatigue, or tiredness, insomnia or trouble sleeping, vivid dreams, hair loss, nausea or diarrhea, or increased urination.

Calan Precautions

Tell your doctor your medical history, including : If you have kidney disease, have liver disease, are on a salt-restricted diet or have high levels of potassium in your blood, or are taking a potassium supplement (e.g., K-Dur, Klor-Con, others), or a potassium-sparing diuretic such as amiloride (Midamor), triamterene (Dyrenium, Dyazide, Maxzide), or spironolactone (Aldactone). Calan should not be used without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or are planning a pregnancy. As it might passes into breast milk and may affect a nursing infant. Ask your doctor Before breast-feeding a baby. Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Calan may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid these activities and notify your doctor. Also use caution when rising from a sitting or lying position. Use alcohol cautiously. Alco----ol may further lower blood pressure and increase drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking Calan.Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may interact with Calan. The interaction could lead to potentially dangerous effects. Discuss the use of grapefruit and grapefruit juice with your doctor. Do not increase or decrease the amount of grapefruit products in your diet without first talking to your doctor.

Calan Drug Interactions

Tell your doctor of all nonprescription and prescription medication you are using, especially : cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral), cimetidine (Tagamet, Tagamet HB), carbamazepine (Tegretol, Carbatrol), lithium (Lithobid, Eskalith, others), theophylline (Theo-Dur, Theochron, Theolair, Theobid, Elixophyllin, Slo-Phyllin, others), rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane), phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton), an HMG CoA reductase inhibitor such as atorvastatin (Lipitor), lovastatin (Mevacor), simvastatin (Zocor), and others, or another heart medication such as propranolol (Inderal), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), atenolol (Tenormin), digoxin (Lanoxin), quinidine (Quinora, Quinidex, Quinaglute), flecainide (Tambocor), disopyramide (Norpace), captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), and others. Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Calan.

Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines.

Calan Overdose

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, weakness, chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, an unusually fast or slow heartbeat, coma, slurred speech, and confusion.

Do not share Calan with others.

Calan Missed Dose

If you miss an Calan dosage, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.

Store Calan at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from sunlight and moisture.
