Betagan Uses

Betagan reduces the amount of fluid in the eye in two ways: It reduces the production of fluid inside the eye, and it increases the amount of fluid that drains from the eye. Betagan is used to treat open-angle glaucoma or ocular (eye) hypertension (high pressure).

How to use Betagan

Use Betagan eye drops exactly as directed on the package or as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you. Wash your hands before using the eye drops. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying Betagan. To apply the eye drops: Tilt the head back slightly and pull down on the lower eyelid. Position the dropper above the eye. Look up and away from the dropper. Squeeze out a drop and close the eye.

Betagan Side Effects

This drug may cause following serious side effects : an allergic reaction (swelling of the lips, face, or tongue, difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, or hives), an asthma attack (shortness of breath or wheezing), or congestive heart failure (shortness of breath, chest pain, or anxiety). Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to use levobunolol ophthalmic and talk to your doctor if you experience burning and stinging, headache, fainting, fatigue, nausea, depression, or irregular heartbeat, slow heartbeat, or low blood pressure.

Betagan Precautions

Tell your doctor your medical history especially : If You have asthma or a chronic lung disease, a very slow heart rate, heart disease such as high blood pressure, heart failure, or heart block, diabetes, or an overactive thyroid. Betagan should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. Do not use other eye medications during treatment with levobunolol ophthalmic except under the direction of your doctor. Before using this medication, tell your doctor if you are taking another beta-blocker by mouth, such as propranolol (Inderal), atenolol (Tenormin), or metoprolol (Lopressor). You may be at risk for increased side effects if you also use levobunolol ophthalmic.

Betagan Drug interactions

Tell your doctor of all nonprescription and prescription medication you are using, especially : if you are taking another beta-blocker by mouth, such as propranolol (Inderal), atenolol (Tenormin), or metoprolol (Lopressor). You may be at risk for increased side effects if you also use levobunolol ophthalmic. Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Betagan.

Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines.

Betagan Overdose

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of a Betagan may Include dizziness, headache, shortness of breath, slow heart rate, difficulty breathing, wheezing, and heart attack.

Betagan Notes

Do not share Betagan with others.

Betagan Missed Dose

If you miss an Betagan dosage, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.

Betagan Storage

Store Betagan at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from sunlight and moisture.
