Aygestin Uses

Aygestin is a form of progesterone, which is a female hormone involved in conception. Aygestin is used to prevent pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation (the release of an egg from an ovary), by causing the cervical mucous to thicken, which makes it harder for sperm to move toward the uterus, and by affecting other hormones, the fallopian tubes and the lining of the uterus.

How to use Aygestin

Take Aygestin exactly as directed on the package or as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you. Take each dose with a full glass of water. Take Aygestin with food or just after eating to lessen stomach upset. Never take more of this medication than is prescribed for you.

Aygestin Side Effects

This drug may cause following serious side effects : an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, closing of your throat, swelling of your lips, tongue, or face, or hives), abnormal vaginal bleeding, absence of menstrual periods, severe headache, vomiting, dizziness, faintness or changes in vision or speech, or sudden or severe pain in your lower abdomen or stomach area. Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take Aygestin and talk to your doctor if you experience nausea, tenderness of the breasts, headache, dizziness, acne, increased hair growth, weight gain, or changes in your menstrual cycle such as frequent or irregular bleeding.

Aygestin Precautions

Tell your doctor your medical history especially : If you have liver disease, undiagnosed, abnormal vaginal bleeding, or any type of breast, uterine, or hormone-dependent cancer. Taking Aygestin may be dangerous in some cases if you have any of the conditions listed above. Before taking Aygestin, tell your doctor if you have high blood pressure, angina, or heart disease, had a stroke, a bleeding or blood-clotting disorder, diabetes, an increased level of cholesterol in your blood, migraines, asthma, or seizures or epilepsy. Aygestin should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.Avoid smoking cigarettes while taking Aygestin. Smoking increases your risk of developing a heart attack, stroke, or blood clot. Aygestin does not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases--including HIV and AIDS. Using a condom is the only way to protect yourself from these diseases

Aygestin Drug interactions

Tell your doctor of all nonprescription and prescription medication you are using, especially :rifampin (Rifadin), phenytoin (Dilantin), carbamazepine (Tegretol), or a barbiturate such as amobarbital (Amytal), butabarbital (Butisol), mephobarbital (Mebaral), secobarbital (Seconal), or phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton). Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Aygestin.

Aygestin Overdose

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of an allopurinol overdose may include nausea, vomiting, flushing, blurred vision, visual spots or flashes, and abdominal pain.

Do not share Aygestin with others.

Aygestin Missed Dose

If you miss an Aygestin dosage, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.

Store Aygestin at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from sunlight and moisture.
