Anafranil Uses

Anafranil is in a class of drugs called tricyclic antidepressants. Anafranil affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause obsessive-compulsive disorder, such as recurrent thoughts or feelings and repetitive actions.

How to Use Anafranil

Take Anafranil exactly as directed on the package or as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you. Take each dose with a full glass of water. Anafranil can be taken with or without food. Never take more of this medication than is prescribed for you.

Anafranil Side Effects

Difficulty in breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, face, or tongue, a fast or irregular heartbeat, a heart attack, high blood pressure (blurred vision, severe headache), difficulty urinating,
fever with increased sweating, muscle stiffness, or severe muscle weakness. Less serious side effects may be more likely to occur, like: drowsiness or dizziness, dry mouth and eyes, constipation, mild tremor, sweating, mild agitation, weakness, ringing in the ears, nausea,loss of weight or appetite. Continue to take Anafranil and talk to your doctor. Side effects other than those listed here may also occur.

Anafranil Precautions

Tell your doctor your medical history, including:liver disease, kidney disease, asthma, thyroid disease, diabetes, stomach or intestinal problems, high blood pressure or heart disease, had a heart attack in the last 6 weeks, an enlarged prostate or difficulty urinating, glaucoma. Limit alcohol intake, as it may aggravate drug side effects. Anafranil should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. Caution is advised when this product is used in the elderly since this group may be more sensitive to side effects.

Anafranil Drug Interactions

Tell your doctor of all nonprescription and prescription medication you may use Consult your pharmacist. Do not take clomipramine if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) within the last 14 days. Anafranil may increase the effects of other drugs that cause drowsiness, including other antidepressants, alcohol, antihistamines, sedatives (used to treat insomnia), pain relievers, anxiety medicines, and muscle relaxants. Tell your doctor about all medicines that you are taking, and do not take any other prescription or over-the-counter medicines without first talking to your doctor. Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Anafranil.

Anafranil Overdose

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include irregular or unusually slow or fast heartbeat, unusual nervousness or excitement, rapid breathing, confusion, hallucinations, and seizures.

Anafranil Missed Dose
